Laos actually owns the lion's share of the Mekong, the greatest river in Southeast Asia with an estimated length of 4,350 km (2,703 mi), and due to the scarcity of roads and rugged terrain, the river is the main means of transportation in Laos, and the upper Mekong in Laos is considered one of the most breathtaking journeys in the entire river. A good way to enjoy the scenery is by boat from the northern part of Thailand to Luang Prabang.
